![]() They will be mounted and coaligned on a dedicated common optical bench. ![]() These two instruments, the electronic boxes and two redundant Guide Telescopes (GT) constitute the AIA suite. They will be simultaneously operated with a 10-second imaging cadence. MAGRITTE, famous 20th Century Belgian Surrealistic Artist), five multilayer EUV channels with bandpasses ranging from 195 to 1216 Å, and the SPECTRE Spectroheliograph with one soft-EUV channel at OV 629 Å. The telescopes are grouped by instrumental approach: the MAGRITTE Filtergraphs (R. Å He II, 629 Å OV, 465 Å Ne VII, 195 Å Fe XII (includes Fe XXIV), 284 Å Fe XV, and 335 Å Fe XVI. The Solar Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) aboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory will characterize the dynamical evolution of the solar plasma from the chromosphere to the corona, and will follow the connection of plasma dynamics with magnetic activity throughout the solar atmosphere. The roles of short-period waves, shock formation and granular piston excitation and the issue of long-lived patterning remain open we suggest avenues for further research. The grains are due to interference between a pervasive standing oscillation with about a 180 s periodicity and an 8 Mm horizontal wavelength in the chromosphere and the wave trains of the evanescent p-mode interference pattern in the upper photosphere. We conclude that the grains are a hydrodynamical phenomenon in which magnetic fields do not play a major role. We then review interpretations and simulation efforts, adding computations of our own to illustrate modeling options. We resolve various contradictions, connect hitherto unconnected observations, distill new constraints and relate signatures in the measurement domain to signatures in the Fourier domain. We review the extensive observational literature on these grains and on related phenomena. ![]() Grains, which are intermittently present in the interiors of network cells in quiet-Sun areas, should provide important diagnostics of the dynamical interaction between the quiet photosphere and the chromosphere above it, but their nature has so far eluded identification. ![]()
